Questions
Which format should I use?
Code 128 for general labels and inventory. EAN-13 / UPC-A for retail products (you need a registered GS1 number to sell in shops).
Is the check digit added automatically?
Yes. For EAN and UPC you can type the number without the last digit and it will be calculated.
